The experience blends cinematic storytelling, cutting-edge VR technology and carefully researched archaeological detail to transport guests to the Peruvian Andes.
Designed for shared exploration, the experience is ideal for families, couples, friends and budding historians, offering a unique way to explore one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites without leaving Manchester.
We were invited along to its opening night, and my husband and I were excited to experience the virtual reality attraction that has been receiving such amazing reviews.

What Is Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City?
Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City is a free-roam virtual reality experience that transports visitors to a detailed recreation of the ancient Inca citadel.
It uses high-quality archaeological data, including LiDAR scans, drone imagery and photogrammetry to build an accurate digital version of Machu Picchu that you can explore on foot.
Location
The experience is held at Transmission House, 11 Tib Street, Manchester M4 1AF in the Northern Quarter.
Opening & Duration
The Manchester edition opened in late 2025. The full experience lasts around 45–60 minutes, including check-in, briefing and headset fitting.
Our Experience – What It’s Actually Like
We started by placing our belongings in the complimentary lockers before being fitted with comfortable VR headsets. After a short safety and movement briefing, we stepped into the fully walkable VR zone.
The experience begins at a time-travel agency. It’s here that you first meet TERI, the cheerful robot guide who becomes your companion throughout the adventure.
The setting adds a fun, story-driven introduction, easing you into the idea of travelling back centuries before you step into the full immersive environment. It’s a great touch — especially for families and younger visitors — and makes the transition into the virtual world feel seamless and exciting.
After TERI explained what to expect from our journey and a few dad joke-style puns, it was time to travel back in time. Before we knew it, we were surrounded by sweeping mountain views, ancient terraces and stone temples. It genuinely felt like being transported into another world.
We walked side-by-side and explored at our own pace, guided by TERI, a friendly in-experience narrator who shares information about Inca life, architecture and rituals. You get to observe various Inca residents, look up close at artefacts and really get a feel for what life would have been like.
The level of detail — from the stonework to the layout of the plazas — is impressive and incredibly immersive. It was easy to forget it wasn’t real as I paused at viewpoints, admired mountain panoramas, and even ‘stepped over’ virtual rocks in narrow paths.
The educational elements are also entwined with lots of additional fun. Along with TERI, you are also joined on your journey by Larry the Llama, who jumps to each new area with you and is very cute – you will reach out to stroke him more than once.
Plus, there is a bit of a dramatic ending, which I won’t reveal any more about so as not to spoil the surprise.
Why It’s Ideal for Families
If you’re searching for family-friendly things to do in Manchester, this experience is a fantastic option. Children aged 10+ can participate, making it a brilliant activity for older kids and teens. The learning element — combined with the fun of walking freely inside a virtual ancient world — means it appeals to both adults and younger visitors.

Our Verdict
We both thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City. The blend of realism, exploration and storytelling creates a memorable, atmospheric experience.
Whether you’re planning a date, a family outing or a cultural activity with older kids, this VR journey is well worth visiting.
