Families visiting before Christmas Day often encounter Father Christmas along the trail, and the food stalls dotted through the grounds offer hot chocolate, toasted treats and the occasional fairground sparkle.

Fire pits invite marshmallow toasting, and festive drink stations make a cosy mid-trail pause. The experience suits families with children who enjoy a little storytelling and adventure woven into the walk. Pair it with a warm meal in Knutsford to round off the evening.

Glow returns to RHS Garden Bridgewater from 26th November to 30th December 2025 with an elegant mix of rainbow lighting, mirrored reflections and atmospheric music inspired by Manchester’s cultural heartbeat. Pathways curve through illuminated tunnels and up towards the Garden Cottage, where projections bring the building to life in shifting colours.

Many families choose to visit the gardens in daylight and stay on for Glow after dusk, making a full day of it. With food stalls and warm drinks near the trail entrance, it’s a lovely winter evening for all ages.

Twilight Tales brings a magical glow to Freight Island with a series of immersive, story-driven light installations designed for families.

Running from 13th November to 23rd December, the experience winds through themed zones filled with shimmering tunnels, glowing caves and playful festive touches, creating the feeling of stepping into a winter storybook. The route is gently paced and easy to navigate, making it ideal for younger children as well as mixed-age families looking for something atmospheric and manageable.

Once you step back into Freight Island, the festive mood continues with street-food vendors, warm drinks and covered seating — perfect for winding down after the trail. Lightwaves at Salford Quays is one of Greater Manchester’s rare free winter light experiences, stretching across MediaCity and the waterfront. This year it will run from the 4th to 7th December 2025, and you can expect fresh commissions, interactive artworks and glowing sculptures that invite families to pause, play and explore.

Its location makes it easy to combine with a wander along the Quays, a quick bite to eat or a visit to the nearby Christmas market. Lightwaves is a brilliant option for families wanting a flexible, low-pressure outing without ticketed times.

Northern Lights at Heaton Park, Manchester Christmas Light Trail

Northern Lights Manchester brings a brand-new festive light experience to the vast surroundings of Heaton Park, transforming one of Europe’s largest urban parks into a mile-long illuminated journey.

Running from Thursday, 20th of November to the 31st of December 2025, there will be around a dozen immersive zones – from glowing tunnels and floating lakeside lights to colourful floral arches and shimmering “bee” installations – that deliver that big, magical Christmas atmosphere families love.
