With the cold weather and often rainy days, it is not always easy to entertain the kids over October half term.
However, we are lucky that there are lots of great events include lots of free and cheap activities in Tameside over the school holidays.
To help you find something your kids will love in Tameside this half term we have put together our top picks of free and cheap events on across Tameside.
Half Term Fun Fair Ashton Town Centre
Monday 28th October to Sunday 3rd November 2024.
Micheal Mulhearn will be bringing the fun fair to Ashton Town Centre this half term.
There will be a mix of family and children’s rides which cost £2.00 or less.

Batty Half-Term Activities, Tameside Libraries
Monday 28th to Friday 1st November 2024.
Join Tameside Libraries for Fun Bat-Themed Activities.
There will be chance to join in the circle time with a bat expert to learn what bats are and why they are very useful creatures to have around. Plus ther will be crafts, a batty game and a treasure hunt to enjoy too.
The sessions will take place at:
- Droylsden Library Monday 28 October 2024 10:30 am to 11:30 am
- Dukinfield Library Tuesday 29 October 2024 10:30 am to 11:30 am
- Denton Library Thursday 31 October 2024 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm
- Ashton Library Friday 1st November 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm
The sessions are aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, no need to book they are drop-in.

Make, Do and Play, Portland Basin
Tuesday 29th and Thursday 26th October 2023
Head to Portland Basin for some crafty fun over the half term.
On Tuesday you will be able to make Halloween Mask.
On Thursday you will be able to make embossed foil folk art inspired by the Mexican celebration of the ‘Day of the Dead’.
The sessions run from 11.00am to 3.00 pm and cost only £1.35 per child.

Free Wolves in the Walls , Stalybridge Library
Wednesday 30th October 2024
Join Stalybridge Library for a fun storytelling performance of best selling book Wolves in the Walls.
“Lucy hears sneaking, creeping, crumpling noises coming from inside the walls. She is sure there are wolves living in the walls of her house. But, as everybody says, if the wolves come out of the walls, it’s all over…”
This spooky retelling of Neil Gaiman’s The Wolves in the Walls will be performed by Storyteller Simon Sullivan.
Children must be aged 6+ to watch the performance as there are scary themes but the story does end happily.
There will be two performances that last approx. 50 mins each at 5:15 pm to 6:05 pm and 6:25 pm to 7:15 pm
The sessions are free but booking is required.

Magnificent Mushrooms Family Workshop, Portland Basin
Wednesday 30th October 2024
Portland Basin has teamed up with Myco (Manchester Mushroom Co-op) for a day of magnificent mushrooms.
You will learn how to create and cultivate your own mini Oyster mushroom bucket, with soil-covered hands you’ll get to take it away so you can grow your own mushrooms at home.
It is sign-up when you arrive as these are timed and space-limited workshops throughout the day. The workshops run from 11:30 am to 3.00 pm.

Make a Beastly Boggart, Tameside Local Studies and Archives Ashton
Discover the mischievous world of Boggarts, the spooky sprites said to cause all sorts of mayhem in Tameside!
Join in to create your very own pom-pom Boggart and dream up their mischievous backstory, complete with the magical spells needed to banish them.
Fancy dress is optional, but always encouraged! Refreshments will be provided.
The event is free and drop-in and will run from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm.

Family Bat Walk, Portland Basin
Wednesday 30th October 2024
Join Portland Basin for a special family walk discovering the noisy nocturnal world of bats and echolocation with the bat detector.
Bat enthusiast Russ Hedley will lead the walk and talk, and his love for bats will help you discover more about their habitat, environments and how they connect to the greater web of life.
The event will start at 5:30 pm, booking is required and it is play what you can.

Pumpkin Festival at Cockfields Farm
Saturday 12th to Thursday 31st October 2024
Celebrate Halloween at Cockfield’s Farm Pumpkin Festival.
Children grab a wheelbarrow and pick their own pumpkin and carve it leaving the mess behind, grab the perfect family pic in the pumpkin village, watch the fun Halloween show, meet reptiles including snakes and lizards, enjoy a tour around the farm on the Cockfields Farm Haunted Hay Ride.
The ticket will include entrance to the farm to cuddle the bunnies and guinea pigs, hand-feed the barn animals, have unlimited rides on the fairground carousel and lots more.
The festival will be running on weekends and school holidays in October.

Swim Slide and Waves, Hyde Leisure Pool
Swimming is a great family activity. Not only can you have lots of fun but it also tires out the kids.
To make it extra special why not head to Hyde Leisure Pool which has a huge slide, rapids and waves? Their Swim, Slide and Waves sessions will be running each day over the Tameside school holidays.

£2.50 Movies for Juniors at Cineworld Ashton
A trip to the cinema always makes a great holiday treat. The kids are occupied for an hour or two and you can sit back and relax – with the exception of the odd toilet break of course.
To help with the cost Cineworld Ashton will be showing Movies for Juniors kid’s films during the summer holidays which cost just £2.50 per person plus a booking fee.
The films usually change each week from on Fridays.
