Free and Cheap Holiday Activities In Tameside 

With the cold weather and often rainy days, it is not always easy to entertain the kids over October half term. 

However, we are lucky that there are lots of great free and cheap events going on in Tameside over the school holidays. 

To help you find the best cheap and free events in Tameside this half term we have put together our top picks of free and cheap events on across Tameside.

Make, Do and Play, Portland Basin 

Make Do and Play Portland Basin

Tuesday 24th and Thursday 26th October 2023 

Head to Portland Basin for some crafty fun over the half term. 

On Tuesday you will be able to get crafty making autumn-inspired wall hangings. 

On Thursday you will be able to make embossed foil folk art inspired by the Mexican celebration of the ‘Day of the Dead’.

The sessions run from 11.00am to 3.00 pm and cost only £1.30 per child.

Space Fun at Tameside Libraries

Monday 23rd to Friday 27th October 2023. 

Join Tameside Libraries for Fun October Space-Themed Activities. 

There will be crafts, games and a treasure hunt. 

The sessions will take place at: 

  • Hyde Library, Monday 23rd October – 10.00 am to 11.00 am
  • Stalybridge Library, Wednesday 25th October – 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm
  • Denton Library, Thursday 26th October – 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm
  • Mossley Library, Friday 23rd October – 10.30 am to 11.30 am

The sessions are aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, no need to book they are drop-in.

Free Kids Science Workshop, Droylsden Library

Monday 23rd October 2023 

Droylsden Library will be running free science workshops over the October half-term. 

Kids will be able to learn all about Electric Circuits with Hands-On Science including the chance to investigate voltage, explore conductivity and lots more. 

The sessions will run at 10.00 am, 11.30 am and 2.00 pm. 

The sessions are free but booking is required. 

The sessions are for 4 to 11-year-olds and are free.

Halloween Lego Club, Ashton Library

Tuesday 24th October 2023 

Children aged 7 years and over can enjoy a fun Halloween Lego-building session.

The session is free and drop-in, and Lego is provided. 

The club runs from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm

Foraging Walk For Teens, Chadwick Dam

Teens (over 13 years) and adults can enjoy an easy stroll on the hunt for berries, wild herbs, and mushrooms.

Join David Winnard where there will be plenty to stop to look and learn ways to identify the wealth of botanicals on offer at this time of year.

This is an introduction workshop and is free but requires booking.

The session will run 11.00 am to 1.00 pm.

You can bring your own board game or borrow one.  There will also be free juice and biscuits. 

The session is drop in between 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm .

Luna loves library day, as this is where she discovers magic amongst the books from from dinosaurs to mummies, from unexplained mysteries to monsters and magic.

Watch as Luna and dad as they discover magic and mystery, laughter and sadness and, through the power of stories, even start to mend their own history.

The show will run from 11.00 am and 2.00 pm

Bat Detecting Family Walk, Chadwick Dam

Wednesday 25th October 2023

Aimed at children over 7 years and adults, this family-guided walk will give you the chance to become a bat detective. 

Make your way around Chadwick Dam at dusk with the Culture Team and Russ Hedley. As the sun sets we will eavesdrop in on the echolocation call and watch as the bats slip overhead through the darkening sky.

You will discover more about these fascinating nocturnal mammals and have the chance to listen bat detectors to listen to them and sharp eyes to spot them.

The walk will take place from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm.

The walk is free but booking is required.

£2.50 Movies for Juniors at Cineworld Ashton

A trip to the cinema always makes a great holiday treat. The kids are occupied for an hour or two and you can sit back and relax  – with the exception of the odd toilet break of course. 

To help with the cost Cineworld Ashton will be showing Movies for Juniors kids films during the summer holidays which cost just £2.50 per person plus a booking fee. 

The films usually change each week from on Fridays.
