Portland Basin is a free family friendly musuem where you can explore a 1920’s street and learn about the area’s industrial heritage.

Portland Basin in Ashton Under Lyne is located on Ashton canal and makes a great day out for all the family.

Nuts and Bolts Kids Area at Portland Basin Museum

Porland Basin has a great children’s area ‘Nuts and Bolts’ offering dress up, educational play and role play for under 5’s. 

School Holidays at Portland Basin Musuem 

They also offer trails and Make Do and Play craft sessions during the school holidays. 

Little Hands Toddler Group at Portland Basin 

Portland Basin run a weekly Little Hands group for under 5’s offering fun crafts and story telling for pre-schoolers. The toddler group runs term time only on Thursdays see here for more information.

Food and Cafe at Portland Basin Museum 

Bridge View Cafe is located on the lower floor of Portland Basin. The cafe has large seating areas and offering a range of hot and cold food including New Forest ice-cream. 

Portland Basin also offers picnic areas so you can bring your own food.

Parking at Portland Basin Museum 

The museum offers a large free carpark , however this can get full at busy times. 

Public Transport to Portland Musuem 

From Manchester you can get the 216 bus to Chester Square which is just a 8 minute walk to Portland Basin Museum. The Museum is also just a 15 minute walk from Ashton-Under-Lyne Bus station which is serviced by buses from across Tameside and Oldham.
