October half term is on its way, which means looking to entertain the kids.

If you are looking for inspiration to keep the kids busy, there is always lots going on around Manchester and October 2024 will see a whole of exciting events for children and families. 

From lots of Halloween events and pumpkin picking to fun trails, interactive exhibitions, light trails and lots more. 

To help you out we have put together a full list of fun things to do in the October half-term in Manchester for families for 2024.

Join Little Seeds Music and Z-arts for an adventure with Luna and her dad. 

Luna loves library day, as this is where she discovers magic amongst the books from from dinosaurs to mummies, from unexplained mysteries to monsters and magic.

Watch as Luna and dad as they discover magic and mystery, laughter and sadness and, through the power of stories, even start to mend their own history.

The show is aimed children over 3 years old and tickets cost £9.00

Half Term at Heaton Park

22nd to 28th October 2023 

Heaton Park has lots of fun in-store this October half term. 

From a movie afternoon, the chance to meet the Heaton Park animals, Nature Detectives trail, crafts and board games, there is something for all ages. Plus the chance to spend time with her dad.

NERF Action Xperience Manchester, Trafford Palazzo

The NERF Action Xperience is finally open at Trafford Palazzo and offers a great half-term day out.

The centre allows Nerf fans to battle it out in their battlegrounds along with the chance to hone your skills in the testing areas. 

Plus you can try out lots of different interactive sports from basketball hoops to football.

October Fun at Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum at Salford Quays has some great half-term fun in-store for families, all the sessions are free and drop unless it says otherwise.

There events include: 

  • Story Seekers – Animals and War – 21st to 29th October 2023, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm Marking the 80th anniversary of the Dickin Medal, discover amazing stories of animal heroes from the Second World War with our new Story Seekers trolley.
  • Family Hub – Amazing Animals – 21st to 29th October 2023, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm – Learn about the Dickin Medal – awarded to the bravest animals who have served to help the war effort and create a medal for your animal hero. Match up the role to the animal to learn more about the various ways animals have helped. Suitable for children over 5 years.
  • Animals and War – 21st to 29th October 2023, 11.00 am daily – Part of the Big Picture Show. An immersive 360-degree multimedia experience, follow Milo the mouse and his guide Winkie the pigeon, as they discover stories of brave animals who have helped the war effort from the First World War to the present day.
  • We Were There Family Day  – 25th October 2023, 11.00 am to 3.00 pm – Meet IWM’s veterans and eyewitnesses of conflict to gain a unique insight into the impact of war on people’s lives.

October Half Term Fun at RHS Bridgewater Gardens, Salford 

October Half Term RHS Bridgewater Gardens Under Foot Trail

RHS Bridgewater has some fun activities in-store this October. The events are part of the admission price and include:

  • Storytelling with Colour the Clouds, 21st and 22nd October 2023 – Enjoy a wonderful interactive story for over 3’s
  • Great Garden Adventure, 29th October 2023 – Spooky Trail for 3 to 6 years olds (£2.50 per child)
  • Spooky Herb Planting, 23rd and 26th October – Design and create your own spooky pot plant and plant herbs to take home. For over 3’s 
  • Mini Makery Magic, 24th October 2023 – Mini Makery to design and create your own Trick Or Treat tote bag to take home with you to fill with treats. For over 5’s (Free but you need to sign up on arrival)
  • Clay Pumpkin Carving, 25th and 27th October 2023 – Turn a clay pumpkin into a spooky Jack-O-Lantern to take home with you. For over 5’s 
  • Rangoli Art, 28th October 2023 – Have a go at Rangoli – an ancient art that goes back centuries, created at Diwali time to welcome guests and the goddess of wealth into our homes . 
  • Great Garden Adventure, 29th October 2023 – Spooky Trail for 3 to 6 years olds (£2.50 per child)

Family Activities at Manchester Museum 

Manchester Museum Opening Times

After re-opening earlier this year, Manchester Museum makes a great family day out, plus they have some extra fun events on for October Half Term. 

The sessions include: 

  • Meet The Changemakers, 21st to 29th October 2023, 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm daily – Discover new and different ideas and get involved in free creative workshops and activities for all ages.
  • Orpeus and Animals, 24th October 2023, 10.00 am to 3.00 pm – Enjoy a performance and workshop featuring shadow puppetry, classical music and a cast of characters. The session is free, but booking is required. 
  • Black History Month Workshops, 28th October 2023, 11.00 am to 4.30 pm – Families can take part in a series of workshops inspired by the museum’s Afro-Caribbean collections. These include Windrush Stories and printmaking. The sessions are free but booking is required.

Power Up, Museum Of Science And Industry

21st to 29th October 2023 

Kids and adults who love gaming can enjoy the ultimate experience this summer

Gaming fans will be in their element with the chance to play the most popular games from the past 40 years. 

Expect vintage games such as  Pong and Pacman, Streetfighter, modern-day favourites Mario and Minecraft along with the latest VR experiences.  

Tickets are required and cost £8.00 for adults and £7.00 for children.

Mog The Forgetful Cat Trails, Tatton Park

Mog The Forgetful Fan fans can enjoy two themed trails this October half term at Tatton Park.

Head to the Tatton Farm to help find her way through the maze to get home for breakfast, not forgetting to aid her chores along the way. 

You can also make your way to the Tatton Park Mansion to help Mog find Bunny so he can play. 

Both trails cost just £2.00 each on top of the entry price.

The Library Of Enchantment Escape Room, Z-Arts, Hulme

Z-arts are giving you the chance to enjoy a fun family escape room over the summer holidays. 

Aimed at children over 6 years and their adults, the escape room will feature clues, puzzles and challenges with the aim to try to escape the room within the hour. 

Booking is required, and places and like to go quickly. 

The event is closed on Sundays and Mondays

Fairy-Tales World Of Play, Z-Arts Manchester 

Fairy Tales Z-Art Manchester

24th to 28th October 2023

Step into a fairy tale town and through into the woods to discover a world of giants, palaces, gingerbread houses and treasure caves.

Discover a fairy tale role-play world where children can step into the stories that they love.

Trip trap over a bridge (but watch out for the troll!), join in the palace disco with the musicians of Bremen, sit in a giant’s footprint, visit the market and help Jack win some magic beans, and much more.  

Tickets cost £9.45 each and booking is required. 

The sessions are aimed at children from birth to 8 years and their grown-ups.

Afrocats X at Whitworth

24th and 25th October 2023 

Join the Whitworth and Afrocats for a creative cultural experience for all ages.

The event will feature a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, storytelling, music, singing, dancing, and movement.

The sessions will run on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th October 2023 from 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm.

The sessions are free and drop in.

Little witches and wizards can enjoy a fun adventure this October half-term.
