Celebrate the Year of the Dragon and Chinese New Year in Manchester for 2024 with these great events. 

This year Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 10th February 2024 will mark the Year of the Dragon. 

The celebrations will be back in Manchester on the 10th and 11th February 2024 including the big Dragon Parade. 

Here is everything that is going on. 

What is the Year of the Dragon? 

The Dragon is the fifth in the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs. The zodiac animals in order are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. 

Those born in 2012, 20oo, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940 and 2012 will be classed as a Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac, although if born in January or February you could be a Snake. 

Chinese New Year Celebrations in China Town Manchester

Manchester’s China Town will be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a fun street-style party. 

There will be a live performance stage, fun fair and street stalls.

Full details are still to be released, however, last year there were acrobatics, lion dances, singers and lots more. 

When will the New Year celebrations take place in Chinatown?

The China Town celebrations will take place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th February 2024 between 12.00 noon and 7.00 pm

Manchester Dragon Parade 2024

After its return last year, The Dragon Parade will be back to celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Dragon. 

The parade will feature the 175ft Chinese dragon, along with the tradional lion and ribbon dancers, the twelve Zodiac animals, Ancient Army characters and Chinese Opera performers. 

When will the Manchester Chinese New Year take place?

This year the Manchester Dragon Parade will take place on Sunday 11th February from 12.00 pm

What route with the Manchester Dragon Parade Take?

The 2024 route has not yet been announced. 

However, in previous years the parade has travelled down Mount Street, Peter Street, Oxford Street, Princess Street and Faulkner Street ending in Chinatown. 

Chinese New Year Celebrations at Manchester Central Library

Manchester Central Library will be celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Dragon with crafts, face painters and performances for the whole family. 

The event will run on Sunday 11th February 2024 from 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm. 

Chinese New Year Activities at Manchester Art Gallery 

Sunday 11th February 2024

Mark the ‘Year of the Dragon’ at Manchester Art Gallery for fun dragon-themed activities.

You can: 

  • Pick up a sketchbook and pencil from the Lion’s Den and explore the gallery on our dragon-themed trail.
  • Take the trail home with you with our free Bloomberg Connects app and share the fun.
