Ever fancied jumping into a video game? Well, now you can—at the PAC-MAN Live Experience Manchester.

Based on the classic arcade game, it offers a thrilling, real-world chance to not just play PAC-MAN, but to actually become him.

We were recently invited to try it out and discover all the fun it has to offer for families. We sent along our On The Go reviewer Gemma and some of her friends and family members to take on the challenge.

Please note – we were gifted tickets for the purpose of an honest review, and all opinions are those of our review team.

Review: PAC-MAN Live Experience Manchester

As a family of retro gaming fans (and competitive board game players), we couldn’t wait to step into the iconic maze and see if we had what it takes to chomp our way to victory.

The PAC-MAN Live Experience is located on Lower Byrom Street, right next to the Science and Industry Museum. There’s no on-site parking, but we found spaces easily at Spinningfields, which is about a 10-minute walk away. If you’re coming by tram, Castlefield-Deansgate is the closest stop.

We were advised to arrive 15 minutes before our time slot. On arrival, we completed a health waiver and were given a quick rundown of what to expect. Lockers are available for phones and bags, and trust me—you’ll want to be hands-free for this one.

What To Expect

Our time slot was booked for 2.30 pm; however, we weren’t called in to play until nearly 3.00 pm.  We weren’t in any rush and used the delay to catch up with friends — though it may be something to keep in mind if you have plans afterwards.

Once inside, we were all asked to select player names with the instruction that they couldn’t be rude. We were then fitted with high-tech PAC-Vests, which would track our movements and score. We were all excited to see that the vests had our names in lights on the back and a yellow PAC-Man shape on the front.

During a short briefing, it was explained that just like in the video game, the aim was to collect mini pellets, Power pellets and Fruit to gain points. Points could be lost by bumping into Ghosts, walls or each other. The person with the most points at the end would be the winner.

As we geared up to enter the experience, there was one final step before stepping into the action—a giant coin had to be dropped into the slot. After all, we weren’t just walking into any old room; we were diving straight into a real-life arcade game.

The arena itself is split into two massive projected mazes, glowing with neon lights and pulsing with retro sound effects. It genuinely felt like we’d stepped inside a game of PAC-MAN.

Our host, who doubled as the MC, showed us to our maze (another family was playing at the same time ), reminded us of the rules and hyped us up.

The Gameplay

The game is split into three rounds, each lasting a few minutes. At the beginning of each round, we were instructed to select a spot around the arena.

After a small countdown, the game began, and it was time to dash around the maze collecting mini pellets and fruit, dodging ghosts that were projected onto the floor.  If you manage to collect all the mini pellets, you level up.

We were all extremely competitive as we ran around trying to beat each other to the pellets and power items. After each round, the scores are revealed, which made us all more determined to beat each other.

In between the rounds, there were two mini games where you could collect extra points. Plus, at the end, there was a Chaos Round where there were more things to collect, fewer walls and extra ghosts. It was the last chance to gain points, and we all made the most of it, zooming around collecting as many items as we could.

We played as a team of six and played all rounds. However, the team in the other maze had seven players –  one was selected to sit out each time, and their vest transformed into a ghost, which was a clever touch.

Once all the games were completed, the winner was announced. After my son and daughter were close in score at 1st and second place, my daughter was over the moon when it was announced that she was the winner. She was even more thrilled when it was revealed that she had the highest score not only in our team but also beat all the players on the other maze.

I also had my own mini victory, having been last throughout, I discovered that nearly killing myself in the Chaos Round (and realising how unfit I am) was worth it as I jumped up two places to fourth.

On the way out, screens displayed the scoreboard and a stats table showing titles like “Hungry Chomper” for most pellets collected, “Ghost Hunter” for most ghosts caught, and “Most Haunted” for the person most eaten by a ghost.

Souvenirs and Photos

At the start of the experience, we had the option to have our photo taken in front of a branded screen.

On exiting, there was a chance to view all the pictures taken, which cost £15.00. PAC-MAN-themed souvenirs were also available to purchase from £4.99.

What We Thought

The PAC-MAN Live Experience is a brilliant mix of nostalgia and modern tech. It’s immersive, energetic, and genuinely fun for all ages.

My kids are 12 and 15, and it was perfect for them. They loved all the running around, the chance to play a real-life video game and the competitive element, especially when they realised they were constantly beating the grown-ups.

The adults in our party adored it just as much. It wasn’t just nostalgic—it was downright exhilarating. They loved how the game mixed high-energy physical challenges with clever strategy, bringing back childhood memories but with a modern twist.

I thought it was great how immersive it was. From having to insert a coin to enter and to the PAC-MAN and Ghosts crowds watching to dodging obstacles, and the wearable tech, it felt like we had actually stepped into the arcade game.

It was also a refreshing chance to bond with the kids in a game where everyone was equally challenged—and equally entertained.

Whether you’re a lifelong PAC-MAN fan or just looking for a unique family day out, this experience is a must-try. Just be prepared to run, laugh, and maybe even sweat a little – trainers and lightweight clothes are a must.
