We all know sleep is really important for kids. If they don’t get enough for a couple of nights it often leads to days of tantrums, routine disruption and hard to get them to settle at night. If it goes on for longer it can also affect their health. 

So the question is how much sleep do children actually need at each age? 

Although each child is different Medicine Net along with the National Sleep Foundation have provided a simple guide to help parents gauge if their children are getting enough sleep.

It will be no surprise that babies need the most about of sleep. Although some days and nights it may seem that they haven’t slept at all ideally babies should be sleeping for the following amount of time depending on their age. 

How much sleep do one-week old babies Need? 

  • Daytime: 8 hours spread over 4 naps 
  • Nighttime: 8 hours 30 minutes
  • Total sleep: 16 hours and 30 minutes 

How much sleep do Four weeks old Babies Need? 

  • Daytime: 7 hours spread over 3 naps 
  • Nighttime: 8 hours 30 minutes
  • Total sleep: 15 hours and 30 minutes

How much sleep do Three-month-old Babies Need? 

  • Daytime: 5 hours spread over 3 naps 
  • Nighttime: 10 hours
  • Total sleep: 15 hours

How much sleep do Six-month-old Babies Need? 

  • Daytime: 3 hours 15 minutes spread over 2 naps 
  • Nighttime: 11 hours
  • Total sleep: 14 hours and 15 minutes

Although toddlers don’t need as much sleep as babies with all the energy needed for exploring their world and of course the terrible twos they still need to get plenty of rest both in the day and at night.

  • Nighttime: 11 hours and 15 minutes
  • Total sleep: 13 hours and 30 minutes

  • Daytime: 2 hours with 1 nap

Although they might resist some pre-schoolers may still need a nap whilst others can happily go without. As a good rule of thumb your pre-schooler should be getting the following amount of sleep:

  • Daytime: 1 hour and 30 minutes with one nap
  • Nighttime: 10 hours and 30 minutes
  • Total sleep: 12 

How much sleep do Four years olds Need? 

  • Nighttime: 11 hours 30 minutes in total with no naps.

Once they get to school children should have fully dropped their naps and all sleep should be during the night. Although they will need less sleep than in their pre-school days school will tire out primary kids and will still need a decent amount of sleep to be able to function.

You may find that they find it harder to get to sleep at the previous bedtime and sleep later in the morning. They should however ideally be getting the following amount of sleep.

They may not think so themselves but teens do need lots of sleep still. However, their body clocks may change, wanting to stay up most of the night and sleep most of the day. They should be aiming for the following amount of sleep depending on their age.

Medicine Net also indicate that “Research shows that up to 40% of children and teenagers have sleep problems, including trouble falling asleep or interrupted sleep. Lack of sleep can have a negative effect on behaviour, emotions, attention, social relationships, and school or work performance.
