Spies, Lies and Deception – IWM North, Manchester

Spies, Lies and Deception IWM a cartoon with a girl and a shadow of a spy

Step into the hidden world of espionage and subterfuge at Spies, Lies and Deception, a free, family-friendly exhibition running at IWM North this winter and spring.

Whether your family loves history, mystery or interactive challenges, this exhibition brings over a century of real-life spying and deception to life in an exciting and educational way.

Dates & Times

29 November 2025 to  31 August 2026

IWM North is generally open 10:00 am – 5:00 pm daily, though it’s best to check the IWM North website before you visit.

What to Expect

This free exhibition explores the secret world of espionage, from daring covert operations in the First World War to modern tactics and technologies.

You’ll see fascinating real artefacts — like spy gadgets, disguises and classified documents — as well as stories about courageous individuals whose lives were shaped by deception and intrigue.

Families can also take part in an interactive “Mission Room” trail, where kids piece together clues and test their spy skills as they explore the exhibition.

The reading age for much of the content is around 8+, but the exhibition is suitable for curious younger children when explored with adults.

Most families spend around 45–60 minutes here as part of a longer day at IWM North.

Cost

Free entry — booking is not always required for general admission, but checking ahead on the IWM site is recommended, especially during busy periods or school holidays.
