A Free Interactive Light Festival is Coming to Salford

Lightwaves returns to Salford Quays for December 2019 and organisers are promising the most spectacular and innovative programme to date!  
 
As the nights grow darker, FREE festival, Lightwaves is a welcome return to Salford Quays, brightening up those December nights for families everywhere. From Friday 6th December until Sunday 15th December 2019, families can explore public spaces around Salford Quays, which will be illuminated with exciting new and exclusively commissioned digital art displays, along with emerging talent and interactive workshops.

Highlights of Lightwaves 2019

 
Keith Brown’s GeoThicket
 
Lightwaves Festival 2019 will see the world premiere of GeoThicket, a virtual reality experience located in The Lowry. An immersive visual artwork, families are invited to choose their own path through a colourful, multidimensional, geometric wonderland, with the adventure changing with every step.
 
The Light Orchestra
 
Kids are bound to love the Light Orchestra, an interactive sound and light installation, which will have its European Premiere at the festival. Families can become conductors, moving their arms to direct a symphony of light and music. From a conductor’s podium, they will be able to direct an orchestra of motorized projectors, creating beams of light and unique musical sequences that respond to the maestro’s movements.

Cathedral of Mirrors
 
Quays Culture will also be exhibiting one of its own commissioned works, Cathedral of Mirrors by Mads Christensen, an installation of mirrored columns fitted with technicoloured lights. The work will be exhibited in the University of Salford campus foyer at MediaCityUK, as part of the festival.
 
Musical See-Saws
 
One for grown ups and kids alike, families will love these see-saws with a difference.  Wave-field is world famous interactive Musical Seesaws which will turn Salford Quays into an urban playground throughout the festival. Created by Lateral Office and CS Design, with soundscape by Mitchell Akiyama, the illuminated musical seesaws help to encourage interpersonal relationships with strangers as well as giving friends and family the chance to have some fun together.

The Umbrella Project From Cirque Bijou
 
The Umbrella Project will feature 20 local Salford residents, who will all be operating hand-built LED umbrellas to create a kaleidoscopic moving light performance.
 
 

DigiTree
 
An exciting interactive LED installation, DigiTree is new for 2019. The large LED tree, created by Backstage Academy students, blooms with coloured light which changes to show the changing seasons of the year. There is also an LED floor, which will locate and react to the weight of a person,creating illuminated magic at their feet.
 
Homage to the Rain
 
Homage to the Rain will also have its world premiere at the festival, a short film exploring the global human connection through rain.
