Review of Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit

The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality kit has arrived giving car lovers the chance to build their own working engine. Check out what we thought in our review here.
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality promises the chance to construct a fully working model of a petrol car engine. We were kindly gifted the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality for the purpose of an honest review. We asked our Mum on the Go reviewer Gemma, her husband, and children to check it out, and here is what she thought.

Review of Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Set
My mechanic husband loves cars, engines, and general tinkering with machines. He was therefore very excited when we were asked to check out the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality set, especially as it gave him the chance to share this love with me and the kids. Here is what we thought.
What is the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality set?
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality set is a fun STEM product that gives the chance to construct a fully working petrol engine with ignition sound and illuminating spark plugs. There is also a specially designed Augmented Reality app to help understand how an internal combustion engine works and provide an extra interactive experience.
What is In the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit Box?
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality kit contains all the tools you will need to assemble the working model.
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine box contains
- Over 100 engine parts
- An electric motor unit
- A screwdriver
- Haynes Instruction Manual
- Augmented Reality App instruction sheet
- Augmented Reality App placement sheet
The kit requires 2 AA batteries which are not included.
What Age Is the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Set for?
the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit is for children aged 10 years and over.
How close is the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine to a real engine?
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine is designed to be a simplified version of a real car engine. To keep it simple some components which are fitted to a full-size engine are not included in the model including an oil filter, cooling system, air filter, connecting rod bearings, piston rings, oil pump, and alternator.
In addition, some components that are included don’t work as they would on a full-size engine including the water pump, throttle body, dipstick (without oil), flywheel, and clutch. Also instead of a starter motor, there is a small electric motor.
Building the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit.
The kit comes with a Haynes instruction manual with features detailed step-by-step instructions on how to build the engine.
The instructions recommend that before starting you identify the various parts and only remove the parts from the plastic frames. It also recommends carefully removing any burrs (little plastic bits that attach the part to the sheets) as these can stop the engine from working. The steps then take you through each stage on how to put together your engine.
On opening the box my husband was like a kid in a sweet shop, examining all the parts, comparing them to the list, and telling the kids their names. As they started to work through the stages they mostly found the step-by-step instructions easy to follow. However, a couple of the images weren’t as specific as others and a part did get put in the wrong way (which my daughter found hilarious) but this was easily fixed.
Once the engine was build and the batteries popped in the kids were excited to switch it on and watch it come to life with the pistons moving up and down, the valves opening, fan blades and lights showing where the sparks plug would ignite on a real engine.
How long did the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit Take To Build?
The kids helped my husband at every step and it took them all around an hour and a half to build including the time to correct the mistake.
Using the Augmented Reality App for the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine
The set comes with the use of a special Augmented Reality App (available from both Apple and Google stores) and a mat to place the engine on. The app adds a fun creative experience to build allowing you to see animations of key components, engine sounds, detailed descriptions of the parts and a view of the engine exploded.
What did we think of Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit
The Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine kit was a big hit. My husband enjoyed putting it together with the kids and telling them all about the parts and how the engine works.
However, although my husband found the instructions easy to follow, kids may need a little help to make their way through. On the plus side, the size of the engine and tools are great for little hands and the kids could easily put the parts together.
They also loved seeing the engine in action watching all the moving parts along with playing with the app to see more details and learn more about the engine.
Overall the Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Kit is a great toy for both big and little kids alike.
