Review of Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game

As big board game fans we are always on the look out for a new game to try and with a Frozen mad 7 year old we couldn't wait to try Jumbo's new Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game. Here is what you need to know and what we thought.

What is in the Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game Box

The box contains the game board with a stand up castle image, 8 cardboard trees, Elsa, Anna, Christoff, Olaf and Sven playing characters with stands, the water Nokk character figure with stand, a wind spinner, 8 tree cards.

The characters and trees come on a cardboard sheet which need popping out and putting together, with the tree cards being attached to to the trees although this did take a bit of time to do my 7 year old daughter and 10 old son were excited to do this. The wind spinner also required assembly and the raised Castle image needs propping up, but these were a little more complicated and I needed to give a little helping hand.

How To Play Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game

Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game is for 2 to 4 players with the aim to work together to rescue Elsa before the Nokk reaches her.

Before you can play the trees need shuffling and then placed with the characters in the correct places. Anna, Christoff, Olaf and Sven near the castle end of the board and Elsa and the Water Nokk at the end of the sea path leading to Elsa.

As this is a team game all characters get are placed on the board no matter how many players there are. Plus all players play with all characters and can move any character they wish on their move.

The game begins with the youngest player blowing the wind spinner. If the spinner lands on a number the player chooses a character to move the number of spaces indicated. If it lands on The Water Nokk image you move the The Water Nokk either forwards or backwards depending on the image.

When moving the characters you cannot pass another character unless you are at a fork in the road and you have to stop behind the blocking character.

If you pass or land on a leaf symbol you need to pick up a tree and look at the base (the tree then gets removed for the game). If the image on the base is The Water Nokk you again move the Water Nokk character either one space forward on back depending on the instruction. If the base shows a picture of Honeymaren or Ryder, match the colour behind them to the colour of one of the characters. Then move this character to the coloured circle on the game board. This could be backwards or forwards and if the spot is occuppied you can move it to the next closest spot to Elsa.

To win the game all the characters need to reach Elsa before the Water Nokk does.

At first look the rules seem complicated but once playing they are easy to understand. The game is also quick to play with it only taking around 10 to 15 mi utes after the initial set up.

What Age is Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game

The Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game is for children aged 4+ and it definitely pitched at that age. After setting the characters up and playing a game it is an easy game to understand.

Although my 7 year old daughter is a big Frozen fan, on seeing the age on the box, she thought it might be too young for her. But as soon as she saw the board and the characters she couldn't wait to play and really enjoyed it. However after the first game she did say that it was a bit too easy and so on the next game we moved the Water Nokk closer to Elsa (as suggested in the rules) and she decided that the move backwards Water Nokk images should we mean that we move one of the characters back - these both worked well.

What we though about Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship Game

We had lots of fun playing Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship game. I loved that everyone has to work as team and although not having a set character it took some getting use (my daughter was not impressed when my husband moved Anna) it was a great way to get the kids thinking about the best move to make.

Although my older children found initially found it a bit too easy to win, once we made a few amendments to make it harder they both loved it - including my 10 year son who first said it looked too girl for him.

With the easy to follow rules and the fact there is no overall winner, the Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship is an excellent game for younger children, especially those just learning the joys of board game. Add in the attention to detial in the Frozen theming, Disney's Frozen II - True Friendship will make a great gift for little Frozen Fans.
