Tina O’Brien’s Manchester drama school, The Drama MOB, celebrates its 10th Birthday.

The Drama Mob was set up in 2013 by Tina and her best friend Esther Morgan after Tina couldn’t find a suitable acting class for her then 5-year-old daughter Scarlett.

Since then the Manchester drama school has grown from one class of 7 children to 23 with over 400 students from age 4 years to adult.

After starting life at The Old Parsonage in Didsbury, The Drama MOB now also offers classes, at Gatley Hill House in Cheadle and The Fairways Lodge in Prestwich.

To celebrate the occasion The Drama MOB recently held a party for all their students and their families complete with face painting by Clever Creations, walking magician Magic Philip and lovely party food by Whisk It And Nibbles

Tina told us “We’ve been incredibly lucky that the classes have grown year on year and have become part of the local community. It’s been lovely to watch the kids grow over the years. One young boy has been with us from the very first class and is now in his teens in the senior lessons and it has been amazing to him develop in confidence and acting skills”.

The popular classes focus on all areas of acting and performance, designed to build confidence through drama games, emotion work, turn taking and working in a team.

Older children also have the opportunity to work on scripts, building characters, improvisations and devised pieces.

Each year they also offer the kids the chance to show off their skills from in-house performances to shows on the big stage at The Lowry and The Waterside in Sale.

Esther who was a primary school teacher at the time of setting up the classes and now runs The Drama MOB full time said ” When we began the classes, never did I think ten years later we would be where we are now with over 400 students.”

“We had the vision to create a high-quality drama school full of expertise and professional staff. We are blown away with how the school has grown and thanks to our fantastic teaching team we have maintained so many loyal families who have been with us from the beginning”

Recently, The Drama MOB has joined forces with HBA Hannah Bounds Acting launching The Academy aimed at offering acting classes for those over 16 years.

In 2015, Tina and Esther launched The DM Management casting agency.

The agency was set up with the aim of helping children and their families navigate the world of TV and film industries.

To ensure that each child they represent gets a personal touch, kids wishing to join need to undertake an assessment and performers will only be taken on when they are ready.

Tina said “The agency has been a natural progression of our classes. Knowing our children so well has enabled us to find the right child for each brief that comes in”

Over the years they have placed numerous children in Hollyoaks and Coronation Street, representing all 7 babies who played Chesney and Gemma’s quads.

In fact, Tina’s current on-screen son Harry Platt is played by twins Freddie and Isaac (pictured above) both are part of the Drama MOB agency.

They have also worked with brands such as John Lewis, representing Freddie Henderson playing the youngest Elton John in their infamous Christmas ad.

Other successes have seen children playing roles in music videos such as Paul McCartney’s Fuh You and Liam Gallagher’s video One of Us, films such as Your Christmas or Mine and The Railway Children and lots of TV programmes including ITV’s Drama No Return and Channel 4’s Comedy Everyone Else Burns.

Tina’s own daughter Scarlett is also on the books, following in her mum’s footsteps playing Izzy Charles in Waterloo Road.

Last year also saw the DM Management represent adults for the first time.

Esther revealed “I feel very proud that we become one of the North’s leading agencies”

“There is not a day that goes by when I don’t spot Drama MOB talent on the TV, in a magazine or on social media, advertising some of the biggest brands in the UK. “

“I am excited to see what each new year brings and feel more focussed than ever to bring a high-quality provision to the children and young performers of Greater Manchester.
