It has been confirmed that the big organised bonfire events across Manchester including Heaton Park have been cancelled.

Manchester City Council have confirmed that their organised bonfire and firework events across Manchester parks have been cancelled for the second year running.

The bonfire night events were planned for Heaton Park in Prestwich, Debbdale Park in Gorton, Platt Fields in Fallowfield, Crumpsall Park in Crumpsall, Wythenshawe Park in Wythenshawe , Brookdale Park and the Ethiad Stadium near Manchester City Centre. The decision has been made as a result of the fears surrounding the spread of Covid-19 with rates in the area currently growing rapidly. In light of the current Government advice around large scale events, the council organised firework and bonfire events will not be going ahead.

Manchester City Council has indicated that the advice has made the events not possible and the ‘health of Manchester people has to come first’.

Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar, executive member for neighbourhoods, said: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly and I know that many people who look forward to these events will be disappointed, especially when we could not host them last year because of coronavirus restrictions.

“But the health of Manchester people, and the logistical considerations around that, has to come first.”

It is currently not clear if the Manchester City Council New Year celebrations will still be going ahead.
